Considerations for furbearer trapping regulations to prevent grizzly bear toe amputation and injury

چکیده
Under the North American Model of wildlife Conservation, managers are encouraged to update management approaches when new information arises whose implementation could improve viability populations and well-being animals. Here we detail an observation several grizzly bears with amputated toes in southeast British Columbia between 2016-2020 assemble evidence inform strategies remedy issue. During capture 59 bears, 4 individuals (~7%) had on one their front feet. The wounds were all healed linear nature. Further opportunistic record collection revealed that similar examples occurred beyond our study area neighboring mountain ranges internationally. We found seasonal overlap active season for fall trapping seasons—for small furbearers body-gripping traps wolves foothold traps—were frequently responsible toe amputation. Photo suggested main trap type associated Multiple options reduce or eliminate incidental amputation bear exist, have varying degrees expected efficacy require differing levels monitoring. One option is delay start marten until December 1, most denned, instead opening prior November more than 50% still active. An alternative solution, such as a license condition requests trappers narrow trap-box entrances exclude feet while allowing entrance target furbearers, has potential minimize accidental but effectiveness this approach unknown. Finally, experimental extraction trials better anchoring was not viable solution given adult only came free from 20% time under maximum human force. At least 230 kg pull required consistently traps, which will be able produce unless cable long allows running start. Solutions do involve changes monitoring compliance ensure success.

Trapping and furbearer management in North American wildlife conservation.
Furbearer Management in North America maintains wild furbearer populations at sustainably harvestable, scientifically determined and socially acceptable levels. Furbearer management impacts numerous wildlife populations and habitats, and human health, safety and property. Achieving balance in the management of furbearers is not always an easy task partly because regulated trapping, a controvers...
متن کاملSpace–time clusters for early detection of grizzly bear predation
Accurate detection and classification of predation events is important to determine predation and consumption rates by predators. However, obtaining this information for large predators is constrained by the speed at which carcasses disappear and the cost of field data collection. To accurately detect predation events, researchers have used GPS collar technology combined with targeted site visi...
متن کاملA Review of Grizzly Bear Harvest Management in British Columbia
This review builds on the information presented in Hamilton and Austin (2002). The purposes are: 1) to identify and present information on the outstanding scientific and management issues involved in assuring that hunting does not represent a conservation threat to grizzly bear populations and, 2) to outline potential future directions that are under consideration for grizzly bear harvest manag...
متن کاملGrizzly Bear Density in Glacier National Park, Montana
We present the first rigorous estimate of grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population density and distribution in and around Glacier National Park (GNP), Montana, USA. We used genetic analysis to identify individual bears from hair samples collected via 2 concurrent sampling methods: 1) systematically distributed, baited, barbed-wire hair traps and 2) unbaited bear rub trees found along trails. We u...
متن کاملConfronting Uncertainty in Wildlife Management: Performance of Grizzly Bear Management
Scientific management of wildlife requires confronting the complexities of natural and social systems. Uncertainty poses a central problem. Whereas the importance of considering uncertainty has been widely discussed, studies of the effects of unaddressed uncertainty on real management systems have been rare. We examined the effects of outcome uncertainty and components of biological uncertainty...
